By taking part, you’ll kickstart a series
Every child is born curious, a natural learner. But a culture of competition, perfectionism and pressure in school is turning students off from learning and making them sick.
Too often, school policies and practices value students’ rankings and test scores over engaging and meaningful work. Across the nation, only half of adolescents report feeling engaged in school. Young people are experiencing epidemic rates of anxiety and depression, some tragically taking their own lives as a result. And 60% of students graduate high school unprepared for college or career.
There is broad consensus among developmental scientists that children learn best through collaboration and creative, real-world problem-solving. Students who learn in this way aren’t just more engaged, but also healthier, more resilient and better able to navigate adult life. This is the kind of education that helps children flourish rather than wilt—the kind they have a right to.
Our children’s health and success hinges on changing school culture from the ground up. Your participation matters.
Over the last ten years, we have seen hundreds of schools transform to become close-knit communities built on values of wellness, collaboration and meaningful learning that children take with them into the rest of their lives. Here’s what we’ve learned:
- Change comes from courageous grassroots advocates. A local community can powerfully shape its school, regardless of state and federal policy.
- Change happens when communities bravely come together to problem-solve in live settings, despite busy schedules or push-back.
